HP Envy 17t-j100 17.3" reinserted the battery, connected the power cord,HP Assistant updated BIOS;

After reading various posts, I solved the problem.  I disconnected the power and removed the HP Envy 17t-j100battery.

I then reinserted the  HP Envy 17t-j100 battery, connected the power cord, and pressed the power button.  The BIOS update "recovered," continued, and the system finally booted up.  I was able to enter my password and the system is working normally now.  I'm by no means a computer expert, so this experience was really frightening.  I hope my solution helps someone else.

You should have your Windows Updates set to Notify as well as Bios Updates Notify; You can prevent more surprises by setting the HP Assistant to Notify in Settings; When HPSA is set to Notify, you still receive notifications of Updates.  You decide when it is a good time to download and install those updates. Your computer's Support Pages -- LOTS of good information here:  manuals, drivers (there will be more than you need - compare against what you see in Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager), Troubleshooting...
all sorts of "stuff".
You need to select your exact model and there you go!
